how rainbows got their colour

Once upon a time there lived a mischievous elf named Gurneen. He liked to play pranks on anyone he knew, but he especially loved to play pranks on his friend Ink, the great wizard.

One day Gurneen saw Ink walking across a field near his house. At that time, the elf was painting a picture, but he was in such a hurry to play a prank on Ink he forgot to wash his hands, leaving some coloured paint on his hands. Gurneen ran out the door and started to follow Ink. Suddenly, Ink stopped in the middle of the field and Gurneen hid behind a bush. Gurneen saw Ink take out his wooden wand and he conjured up a large arched bridge. Gurneen decided to follow Ink and see what he was up to.

Ink got up over the bridge in no time at all, so Gurneen got out from behind the bush and ran over to the edge of the bridge and started to walk up it quietly so that Ink wouldn't hear him. After a hour or so, Gurneen was half way up the bridge. He decided to take a rest then, feeling cheated because it took Ink a few minutes to walk over the bridge, because his stride was so long. Gurneen put his head in his hands and started to wail.

“All I wanted to do was cause Ink a bit of trouble!” He started to cry. Then all the paint from his hands started to flow down the bridge. First was red, then orange, yellow, green, blue, purple and indigo. Then Gurneen started to cry even more because he ruined Ink’s lovely bridge.

After a few minutes, Gurneen heard footsteps from behind him then he heard Ink’s loud voice “You won’t try to cause mischief for me again, will you?”

“N-n-no, s-s-sorry ,n-now I know what a nuisance I've been.” Gurneen replied in sobs.

Then, Ink said, “I like what you’ve done to my bridge! It brings a bit of colour into it.”

From that day onwards, Ink and Gurneen were the best of friends, and that is how rainbows got their colour!
