hetalia: axis powers

Explanation: Hetalia is a Japanese comedy series done in manga style. It’s mostly about world affairs of the past and present between countries.

Plot: The series mentions and portrays a lot of countries, despite the distinct lack of Ireland. Each country is portrayed as a single, ever so slightly stereotypical character. The Axis Powers series of Hetalia mostly focuses on the Axis Powers of World War Two; Germany, Italy and Japan, and the Allies; England, America, France, China and Russia.

It starts out as the countries fighting World War One, but the characters of Hetalia act out seemingly random historical events in a – well, bizarre way. If you love weird and wonderful things, you’d adore Hetalia.

Altogether, there are 52 episodes to watch. The first few episodes mainly concentrate on the alliance of Germany, Italy and Japan. There are breaks in the episodes called “Chibitalia” which explain Italy’s tragic past as a country, in adorable chibi* (*Japanese for dwarf) style! The series also highlights the Allies’ struggles to battle the Axis Powers as well, especially playing on the relationship between America and England.

Audience: The show is mainly aimed at anime/manga fans, but I would recommend it for people who have no experience in this genre at all! It has slight adult humour in it as well as slapstick, and of course the general oddities that make Hetalia the quirky series that it is.

If you’re interested in watching Hetalia, links to the first episode on Youtube are below in two flavours – subtitled with original Japanese voice-overs, or a dubbed English version!
