The Fault in Our Stars is the fourth solo novel written by John Green. The book reached the top spot on the New York Times bestsellers. The rights for this book have been sold and a movie adaption has been filmed. It stars Shailene Woodley as the main protagonist and narrator Hazel Grace Lancaster and Ansel Elgort as Augustus Waters, her love interest. Other characters include their mutual good friend Isaac portrayed by Nat Wollf.
Hazel Grace is a seventeen year old girl living with lung cancer, and there is no further treatment for her. Her parents make her attend a local weekly support group as they believe she is depressed. One eventful support group meeting changes her life when she lays eyes upon a new face, the face of Augustus Waters - a cancer patient in remission. They quickly realise they both have an equally unusual mind set and are quite alike in character and they form a friendship. They bond over the love for one book by the author Peter Van Houten. Thing escalate as they both fall in love with each other and unbeknownst to Hazel, her final chapter is about to be completely rewritten and have a majorly different and heart-wrenching outcome.
This book is by far one of my favourites. The story is pure simple and the characters are extremely likeable and you can’t help but fall in love with Augustus’ charisma. This book is beautifully and eloquently written and I can guarantee you, you will go around in a daze after reading this. This book has the ability to make you question everything in your life and wonder what you are doing with your life. You will be captured from the very first page and won’t stop until you get to the climatic end.
I would recommend this book for 14+ as the language is quite challenging in it. It’s a beautiful story about first loves and short lives; that anyone, of any age, can really relate to. It is about the unfairness in the monopoly of our universe.
