FANTASTIC FOUR

Picture
Fantastic Four, the modern re imagining of Marvel’s ‘First Family’ and highly anticipated reboot of the 2005 flick, is an American superhero film centred around four young outsiders who are transported to an alternate dimension, which causes them to gain extraordinary abilities.

Fantastic Four feels like an hour and a half trailer for a sequel. The first half an hour is genuinely enjoyable, the set-up was interesting and had my interest captured immediately. Unfortunately, it’s all downhill from there. The build up just keeps going and going, until, almost three quarters of the way into the movie, we finally get a poorly executed mess of an action scene as a disappointing climax.

The film takes itself much too seriously. Drab, dull dialogue and pointless exposition makes up the majority of the run time, with the action scenes few and far between. For a superhero movie, that’s not good. We hardly even get a glimpse at the quartet’s superpowers.
The team have almost no chemistry together, and a talented young cast are wasted on a subpar script that’s flat and humourless. There are some really wonderful character moments, however, that are really Fantastic Four’s saving grace. Michael B. Jordan, Kate Mara,  Miles Teller and Jamie Bell do their absolute best with what they’re given, and there are moments where they truly shine.

All in all, Fantastic Four is an utterly disappointing letdown. And what is a Marvel movie without a Stan Lee cameo, anyway?
