Micheal like most people enjoyed living in the luxury that the year 4015 provided. Things like homelessness and the common cold were things of the past, unheard of to the average person’s ear. Yes, this is a new era and things have definitely changed like two things for example; one: people, apart from yourself can see the date you die, and two: everything up until you find your soulmate is in black and white, once you find them you find colour also, but, if they were to die everything would go back to black and white. The government called it “technical evolution” within human beings; no one understood how it was possible so we just accepted that statement.
Anyway, Micheal was a simple man, living a simple life with his wife Karen. He woke from his bed and checked the alarm clock; 8:30, his eyes widen and he was suddenly fully awake 30 minutes to get to work. He got dressed and jogged to the bathroom to brush his teeth before he left.
“Karen” he yelled (barely audible as his mouth was full of toothpaste.
“Will you please buy another calendar I’ve completely lost track of the date and it’s ridiculous at this point”. Finishing up he headed towards the door to leave for work. Karen as per usual was waiting at the door to see him off.
“Course honey,” She smiled, pecking him on the lips.
Micheal wasn’t too worried about being late; he worked in a family business so everybody knew both him and Karen very well. His family was a hardworking and honest group of people. Parking his car, he jumped out and walked into the car garage where he worked, arriving into the building he could sense something was off. Everyone was looking at him in a strange way he couldn’t describe. Ignoring it he walking into the changing room and changed into his blue jumpsuit suitable for work, he walked over to his father, he was working on a battered BMW, noticing no other clients or cars to deal with he decided to help out his dad.
“Hey dad,” he said, a weak smile spreading across his face as he gestured to help his dad.
“How are things?” His dad looked up from the bonnet of the car and shot him a weak, pathetic and sympathetic smile.
“Micheal, hey son, look I know you just got here and all, but take the day off, I want you to enjoy this day as much as you can”. He was confused to say the least, but he agreed and submitted to the orders given walking towards the changing room, he shot a glance towards his mam through the reception window, he was taken aback. Her eyes were red and her nose was running, she was bawling her eyes out, a sharp shot of panic coursed through Micheal, paranoia took over him. This was his end he could feel it, why else would his father be so sympathetic and his mam so visually upset.
He hurriedly got changed and was making his way back home to Karen. He wanted to spend his last moments with her.
“Oh Karen, god Karen” He couldn’t bare to think of how she felt, how she had to mask her grief this morning, how she’ll lose sight of colour and go back to black and white. He wanted to get home as quick as possible, he really did but, the car it might have been too dangerous, it could’ve be his coffin, shivering at the thought he decided to run back home.
Running through the town square he noticed a man. His eyes piercing into Micheal’s soul and he stopped running. His glare was intense, menacing, and evil or was that just the paranoia convincing Micheal so. No matter Micheal decided to walk over to whop he assumed was his murderer, in his state of distress; he was going to confront him.
However as Micheal started to walk over a car drove past in front of where the man was standing, the suns gleam hit the car and the reflection of light shone back in Micheals eyes so brightly, he protected his vision with his arm, but when he lowered his arm, and opened his eyes again he didn’t so much noticed the man anymore what he noticed was how this man and all of his surroundings were in black and white.
