Clannad is, in my opinion something very special. It has touched me very deeply. It's animation style is very beautiful. I have on occasion paused the show to look at the scenery and art.
It's a romance set in a Japanese high school. The main character is a boy named Tomoyo Okazaki. He is an outcast and delinquent at school. One day walking to school there is a girl on the path in front of the school talking to herself. He talks to her and throughout the day befriends her. He agrees to help her start up a club that she used to be a part of but while she was sick it stopped. That is one of the many stories that happen throughout the series and a lot of other stories intertwine with this one.
I have watched a lot of anime of this genre and most of them follow the same pattern and are very generic but Clannad stands out among the masses. It has very good character development and shows how love can affect a person. The changes in character aren't forced or surprising. Only at the end do I look back and see how much the characters have developed. The main theme but at the same time it has other important characters and their stories. Instead of romance being the main theme you see how it blooms and grows as other challenges appear. It's unlike a lot of shows I've seen where they love each other for no reason and have to progress quickly for sake of the the story. Instead you see a slow growth over time and it's something very rare. The progression of the story is not forced. Somehow it just flows.
There are moments in this story where I cried of happiness and also times where I cried of sadness. Other times I wasn't really sure why I was crying. This show has a deep meaning. It helps show the beauty in everyday life. People can be very hateful if their life but this makes even the small things seem like miracles. It touches many subjects such as love, loss, life and friendship. It has a kind of supernatural element as well that is in the background for the whole story but is explained at the end.
