blackbear - dead roses

Picture
Mat Musto or better known as Blackbear to his fans is a 23 year old producer, songwriter and pop and R&B singer with an electronic edge. He is a triple threat in the music industry. Blackbear has co-written songs for Artist vs. Poet, Big Time Rush and Justin Bieber “Boyfriend” and produced for G-Eazy and has been featured on tracks by Machine Gun Kelly and Mike Posner. He also collaborated with Pharrell, Childish Gambino and Ne-Yo.

Deadroses was the first studio album by Blackbear and was released on the 14th February 2015 under the label Beartrap. The Afterglow (EP), which was released before Deadroses, is also by Blackbear is centred on themes of depression, relationships and drug abuse. Deadroses tackles many of the same themes as The Afterglow, but with a decidedly more upbeat sound. He now has another album "Help" and another EP "Dead".

The 10-track introduction to the indie artist is a combination of soothing R&B vocals reminiscent of Frank Ocean and Marc E. Bassy's earlier work. Blackbear’s vocals are complimented by a production that spans multiple genres. He lets out all his emotions in the album and is very honest in his lyrics especially the songs such as “Idfc” and "I Needed You". Blackbear’s music is a mixture of catchy melodies and raw, emotional lyrics. Many of the songs on this album sound very similar which can lead you to think that you are listening to one long song although, the last three tracks “Dirty Laundry,” “My Heart Is Lost,” and “Deadroses” save Deadroses from sounding too similar. Blackbear gets very experimental with production in those tracks and they change in mood and the sounds pay off.

Deadroses reached number 20 on the Billboard Album charts on the 28th of February 2015. Blackbear never released any of the tracks from the album as singles.
